Pinchas, David Zvi (1952-1895)

Member of Knesset and Minister of Transportation in the Israeli government. Born in Hungary, grew up in Vienna, and immigrated to the Land of Israel in 1925. He was one of the leaders of the Mizrahi movement and the manager of Bank Mizrahi. He was a member of the Tel Aviv City Council from 1932 to 1950, head of the city’s education department from 1935, and deputy mayor in 1951. He was also head of the religious council in Tel Aviv. From 1944 he was a member of the Elected Assembly, and from 1947 he was a member of the Executive Committee of the National Council. He was a member of the first and second Knessets, and in 1951 he was appointed Minister of Transportation. As part of the fuel rationing supervision, it was decided that every car should be shut down for two days a week, and Pinchas suggested that Shabbat should be considered two days for this purpose. Secular circles were furious with him, a bomb was placed at his house, incident that caused him a heart attack from which he died.
