Brandeis Louis D. 1856-1941

The first Jewish judge on the Supreme Court of the United States and a Zionist leader. Born in the United States, he studied at Harvard. Louis Dembitz Brandeis worked as a lawyer in his hometown of Louisville and in Boston and worked from 1896 to restrict the rights of large corporations for the benefit of the public and workers’ rights. In 1916, he was appointed as a judge on the Supreme Court. In 1910, he became a supporter of Zionism, and as early as 1913, he spoke about a state for Jews. In 1918, he was elected as the honorary president of American Zionists, but he resigned in 1920 due to a disagreement with Weizmann’s supporters. He was granted honorary citizenship of Tel Aviv in 1936 when he turned 80. A kibbutz in Israel was named Ein HaShofet in his honor in 1937 (during his lifetime), as well as Kfar Brandeis in Hadera, and in the United States – Brandeis University in Massachusetts.
